Supermassive black hole How black holes so massive they shouldnt exist form A mysterious, long object is flying towards the centre of the galaxy Star. Doing that allowed the system to essentially fill in the blanks of what was missing in the 2019 image. For the first time, astronomers have captured an image of the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, confirming the presence of the cosmic object. A black hole is a region of space where matter has collapsed in on itself The gravitational pull is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape Black holes will emerge from the. In this case, they had computers look at more than 30,000 pictures of black holes taking in gas. How supermassive black holes get started is not yet known. Medeiros and others developed the PRIMO modeling system, which co-developer Tod Lauer says is a "new approach to a difficult task." That system used a type of machine learning that lets computers make rules based on large sets of "training material," AIS said. A supermassive black hole (SMBH or less often SBH) is a black hole with a mass that is between 10 5 and 10 10 the mass of the Sun.Scientists are confident that almost all galaxies, including the Milky Way, have a supermassive black hole at each of their centers. As described in our press release, astronomers have used NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory to take a major step in understanding why material around Sgr A is extraordinarily faint in X-rays. The width of the ring in the image is now smaller by about a factor of two, which will be a powerful constraint for our theoretical models and tests of gravity." The center of the Milky Way galaxy, with the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A (Sgr A), located in the middle, is revealed in these images. "Since we cannot study black holes up-close, the detail of an image plays a critical role in our ability to understand its behavior. "With our new machine learning technique, PRIMO, we were able to achieve the maximum resolution of the current array," lead author of the research Lia Medeiros said in a press release. Supermassive black hole binaries are a consequence of hierarchical galaxy evolution and have long been predicted to exist. They range in size from stellar-mass black holes, whose masses can run from five to 100 times that of the Sun, all the way to supermassive black holes, which can reach well over a billion. A supermassive black hole lies at the centre of almost every large galaxy, including the Milky Way, while some of the less massive black holes are thought to.

![]() This is not the jaded cynicism which sees nothing new under the sun, it is an elation which sees everything as renewed… This is the revolutionary spirit at its deepest it recalls the spirit to arms.Īnd yet this potential for renewal necessarily coexists with our shared legacy of outrage, which must remain a wakeful outrage and not a somnolent trance if we are to transcend our history. They exhort him against the fearful magnet of older civilizations… Fact evaporates into myth. Yet he has paid his accounts to Greece and Rome and walks in a world without monuments and ruins. ![]() In their exuberance he is still capable of enormous wonder. Their vision of man in the New World is Adamic. Those whom Walcott celebrates as the great poets of the New World - Neruda, Whitman, Borges - reject this model of history and instead uphold a more ennobling alternative: It refuses to recognize it as a creative or culpable force. The truly tough aesthetic of the New World neither explains nor forgives history. Because this literature serves historical truth, it yellows into polemic or evaporates in pathos. In the New World servitude to the muse of history has produced a literature of recrimination and despair, a literature of revenge written by the descendants of slaves or a literature of remorse written by the descendants of masters. Thus, as we grow older as a race, we grow aware that history is written, that it is a kind of literature without morality, that in its actuaries the ego of the race is indissoluble and that everything depends on whether we write this fiction through the memory of hero or of victim. The further the facts, the more history petrifies into myth. They know that by openly fighting tradition we perpetuate it … and that maturity is the assimilation of the features of every ancestor.įor those who take this stance, Walcott argues, “history is fiction, subject to a fitful muse, memory.” In a sentiment that calls to mind philosopher Martha Nussbaum’s incisive ideas about the relationship between agency and victimhood, he writes: They perversely encourage disfavour, but because their sense of the past is of a timeless, yet habitable, moment, the New World owes them more than it does those who wrestle with that past, for their veneration subtilizes an arrogance which is tougher than violent rejection. Those who break a tradition first hold it in awe. ![]() Half a century later, Walcott echoes her insight, turning a skeptical eye to the generation of West Indian writers who dismiss hastily and wholesale the complex colonial legacy of the New World. “Not to go onwards (in verse, as in everything) means to go backwards - that is, to leave the scene,” the great Russian poet Marina Tsvetayeva wrote on the cusp of the Russian Revolution and its attendant cultural revolution as she considered why we must intimately understand something before we can rightfully reject it. That difficult, necessary, transcendent will to weave is what the great Caribbean poet, playwright, essayist, and Nobel laureate Derek Walcott (January 23, 1930–March 17, 2017) explores in a stirring 1974 essay titled “The Muse of History,” found in his essay collection What the Twilight Says ( public library). ![]() Baldwin himself touched on this a decade later in his spectacular and timely 1970 conversation with Margaret Mead about identity, race, and the crucial difference between guilt and responsibility, where he observed: “What we call history is perhaps a way of avoiding responsibility for what has happened, is happening, in time.” Without taking such responsibility we couldn’t create that new and better world, for the great drama of its creation - like that of our self-creation - is that of weaving something new and wonderful from the tattered threads of our cultural history and convention. But we can only make a broken world over if we first closely examine its parts - that is, its pasts - and take responsibility for the conditions as well as the consequences of its brokenness.Īnd yet, too often, we flee and burrow in the comforting certitude of our history, which is not the same as our past, no matter how false and hubristic such certitude may be. “We made the world we’re living in and we have to make it over,” James Baldwin asserted in 1960 as he contemplated freedom and how we imprison ourselves. Portrait Pro popped up with the auto version, it gave her quite the tan and sparkly, but kinda spooky eyes. ![]() So I decided to put the program through its paces with a poorly lit, overly grainy, weirdly white balanced shot of a dear friend who looks lovely no matter how terribly I might light her. ![]() I had only been mucking about and I turned an unusable portrait shot into something the subject of the portrait really liked. That had me thinking this program certainly has potential. I won’t show you the results, because the before shot was a not exactly flattering lighting test, when I say not flattering, a beautiful woman looked more like a potato than herself, and I would like to keep the friendship. I did show my friend both images and she really liked the after shot. It was pretty fun, with a bit of practice I eventually turned my blonde, brown-eyed, no make-up friend into a saucy red lipped, blue eyed, red head vixen with an uncanny resemblance to pop star Kylie Minogue. I tested out the sliders and their effects, then went to town. The simple interface, and pop up instructions made it easy to just jump right in. This one had the correct number of eyes, so I started playing around. Rather than succumb to instructions I tried another image. It came up with an interesting eye situation and I thought, oh dear, this is not good. Portrait Pro did its thing and opened the before and its auto processed after image. All good things, but I’m not one for instructions and just opened the program with a test image. There are instructional videos, tutorials, a forum, a support page, and a manual to download on the website. The download and install were super easy, off to a good start. So this review is not three versions outdated and while there are a few changes it is fundamentally the same product. When our Digital Photography School editor offered a free download of Portrait-Pro 12 Studio Max to test out and possibly review I figured this was a perfect opportunity to see if this kind of thing is something that a cynic like me, I might actually find useful.Įditor’s note: we’ve been informed by the company that there are no versions 13 and 14 (they skipped those numbers) and the newest v15 was released Sept 17th, 2015 (after this review was published). ![]() I want my subjects to look like themselves, in their best light of course, but not like some barbie doll cyborg with lifeless eyes. I always preferred the natural before image to the over processed, plastic looking after images. I had looked into a retouching program briefly, but after clicking on a few sites I never got further than looking at the before and after samples. ![]() I like to keep a natural look, using Photoshop only for any minor retouching needed. Out of the comedies I've seen, I can most identify with this one. There is no question that he must've had his own bout with the way of the office bitch, as he shows that he knows it all too well. Mike Judge really captures the aspect that makes office life so miserable, which is without a doubt the characters that you must deal with that your personal life would normally exclude. Anyone who's ever worked in a corporate office can relate to this film on some level, and can probably swear that they know someone exactly like one of the characters depicted here. ![]() Mr.Easily one of my favorite comedies, and sort of a source of medicine for the pains of working in an office with complete idiots.
I'll keep looking as this is pretty important to me and my productivity is taking a massive hit. so using cat / grep would only really help if I knew what to look for. This works out to be around 209560 lines and I am not sure if this will show null chars or not. I tied to narrow down where in the document the issue might be still working on this one, and the issue does move to a new document at some point but my copying and pasting was a good few hundred thousands lines at a time. ![]() Hi Thanks for you comments, I have not found the solution to the issue yet. I can write one or two letters save the file and reopen it and everything looks fine, doing this per letter would be useless and drive me crazy. Other tabs and files work normally even when the file in question is locked. (Many text editors failed before I found and settled with Geany). So I am hoping its not the size of the file that is now too big for Geany. Lots of things go through my mind on what the cause could be but over time I have tested Geany and believed that it can / could handle larger files without issues. I also thought it might be an illegal character, or a character that geany does not like ((( but searching for a character in such a large file seems problematic ))). I have tried changing the encoding of the file to see if this helped but so far it does it on every type of encoding I have tried (using UTF-8). ![]() I have been searching for the cause without coming to a solution, some time back in June when it started happening it kind of went away for a week or two now it happens constantly every time I open the file.Īt first I thought at first it was a line ending issue or some kind if it is I am not sure what I can do to fix the issue. The standard text file refuses to accept any typing or copying, after sometimes three, four or in the case of the attached jpg seven letters the file locks up and either adds LF or CRLF or some other chars over the top of the normal text appear, its then totally locked until I restart Geany. It started happening for one file around June 2017 after many years of using geany with no issue's. ![]() I am having a bit of a problem with Geany 1.30.1, I use Geany on Windows and Linux and I have not been able to track down the issue. ![]() In fact, unmarried sons and daughters of noblemen were able to secure powerful and lucrative positions in the church as abbots (heads of monasteries) and abbesses (heads of convents). Many monks and nuns came from noble families. The regular clergy also included monks (men who live in religious houses called monasteries) and nuns (women who live in religious houses called convents or nunneries). Prelates were well educated and had luxurious palaces (large homes), whereas parish priests tended to have minimal education and lived in near poverty. There was a wide gulf between high prelates and parish priests in terms of wealth and level of education. All of these clergymen occupied a considerably lower position than the secular clergy, both within the church and in society. Regular clergymen were urban priests (heads of local churches in cities), cathedral canons (heads of cathedrals, or large main churches, in cities), and parish priests (heads of town and village churches). Moreover, they formed the learned elite of late medieval society, until Renaissance education created a new class of scholars from the secular world.īelow the secular clergy were the regular clergy. Prelates enjoyed income from land estates, loans, taxes on clergy, and the wealth of their families of birth. These conflicts reached a crisis during the Renaissance and Reformation. During the Middle Ages the secular clergy wielded extensive power, constantly coming into conflict with kings and emperors over the question of the proper authority of the church. Most prelates came from the ranks of the nobility, although some were from wealthy commoner families and a few had lower social origins. Prelates were the pope (supreme head of the Roman Catholic Church), cardinals (officials ranking directly below the pope), and bishops (heads of church districts). The secular clergy were high officials called prelates. ![]() These duties include holding worship services, hearing confession (church members' admissions of sin), and administering the sacraments (holy rituals) of the Catholic religion. An ordained clergyman is one whom the church officially authorizes to perform priestlyĭuties. The clergy were divided into secular (unordained) and regular (ordained) branches. They were placed at the top of the social ladder because their involvement in spiritual matters was considered vital to the welfare of society. The First Estate was comprised of the Roman Catholic clergy (church officials also called clergymen). The system was somewhat flexible, however, and people frequently moved up within their own social class, or even occasionally elevated themselves to a higher estate. A person's rank on the social scale was determined by birth, gender, sources of wealth, occupation, political position, residency in town or country, and numerous other factors. Each of the Three Estates were further subdivided into many other levels. Since the early Middle Ages, people had been divided into three groups, called estates. Social status was the basis of life in Europe during the Renaissance and Reformation. ![]() ![]() Even today, the meeting between the conqueror and the philosopher serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal of unconventional wisdom and the importance of living an honest and authentic life. Their brief meeting was captured in a famous bas-relief sculpture by Pierre Puget from ca. The reason for the name Cynics is uncertain, but it likely comes from the location of the philosophic school in the Cynosarges area of Athens.ĭespite their vastly different outlooks on life, Alexander and Diogenes died on the same day in 323 BCE. Leaving, he remarked, “If I were not Alexander, I would want to be Diogenes.” Alexander’s attendants were incensed by Diogenes’ behavior, but the king himself seemed to appreciate the philosopher’s unconventional outlook on life.ĭiogenes’ influence on ancient philosophy was enormous, and he was the founder of the Cynics, a school of thought that rejected wealth, pleasure, and social conventions in favor of a simple and honest life. Diogenes, who was enjoying the warmth of the autumn sun, replied, “Stand aside to stop blocking the sun.” This abrupt response, which showed his utter disregard for the power and prestige that Alexander craved, spawned the large number of artistic renderings that followed.ĭespite Diogenes’ rudeness to Alexander, the young king was not displeased. He had a reputation for urinating, defecating, and masturbating in public to show his contempt for society’s conventions.ĭifferent versions of the story of their meeting are found in various ancient sources, but most agree that Alexander approached Diogenes and offered to do anything for him. The philosopher, on the other hand, lived in a barrel, rejected all the norms of civilized behavior, and was usually portrayed as unkempt and nearly naked. The meeting is notable not only for the stark contrast between the two figures but also for the memorable exchange that took place between them.Īlexander, who had already conquered Greece and was on his way to world domination, was dressed in regal attire and accompanied by attendants when he visited Corinth, where Diogenes lived in his later years. Wikimedia Commons alone contains more than fifty artistic renderings of this apocryphal encounter between the young Macedonian king and the aging philosopher. In the history of European art, few moments from classical antiquity have been depicted as frequently as the meeting of Alexander the Great and Diogenes the Cynic. |
